ICE FREE NORTH POLE WITHIN SIX YEARS
Date: Wed Dec 24, 2008 7:15 am. By: Daily Planet Media
Countries in and near the Arctic region predict that the North Pole will have an ice-free summer within six years.
Latest information of declining ice in Earth's far north was presented at the International Arctic Change conference in Quebec City after scientists had completed a 15-month expedition to the Arctic.
Earlier predictions did not have the first ice-free summer taking place until 2030 but the timeframe had now been reduced to 2015.
Most climate scientists contend that an ice-free Arctic for part of the year would have a major impact on the northern eco-system affecting wildlife and indigenous communities.
