TIBER RIVER HOLDS BACK FLOOD
Rome's River Tiber is holding its banks sparing the city's centre from flooding near the Vatican.
The famous river hasn't breached its large stone embankment that snakes through the city's centre.
Weather forecasters expect more rain despite the weather turning finer over the weekend after the city Mayor declared a state of emergency as severe storms last week flooded underpasses, disrupting trains and flights.
Residents were urged not to use their cars so that roads would be clear for emergency vehicles.
Meanwhile the Aniene River that runs through the city's northeast burst its banks causing houseboats and floating restaurants to be thrown from their moorings.
Rains have inundated much of Italy causing one confirmed death, hundreds of injuries and 200 million euros damage mainly to agriculture.
