It sounds reasonable enough, but I'd be more concerned about all that standby energy that will be swamped by general use with that type of measurement.
You can get meters that will monitor individual appliances and see if it would make sense to *turn them off* when not in use rather than use the standy button.

And there's the practical side of standby versus unplugged -
How long are you willing to wait for the TV to re-learn all the channels? (2-5 minutes each tme)
How long are you willing to wait for the cable box to be reloaded with all the program info? (up to an hour for Conmcraptic)
And the VCR/DVR/DVD can't automatically record if it's unplugged - not to mention losing date & time, channel pattern, and any scheduled record info. Oh yeah, need the cable box to record the digital channels...

Mine doesn't have that trouble. It stores the settings..... they're INSTANTLY restored ....but if you will buy cheap crap !
