Honda Inverter Generator Repair Advice please!
Date: Wed Dec 10, 2008 6:28 pm. By: Greg
Hi all, I have been given a generator to repair that is marked as Honda EU 2 Inverter 2000W, it has no 12 volt or AC output.
On opening the unit I see wires going from the alternator directly to the output socket, I see no inverter?
Also I cannot see any slip rings or brushes.
Can anyone with experience of these please give me some advice on how to trouble shoot?
Thanks in advance!!
Greg.

are the electronics installed in the alternator?

Many small alternators these days have a permanent magnet for a rotor (as we now have magnets that are truely permanent). Ergo the electricity is generated in the stator & there is no need for slip rings or a rectifier to provide dc to create the magnet in the rotor. So the device is much simplified. Assuming the insulation is intact and there is electrical continuity/no short circuit in the stator windings, it must work. There may be thermal/ current overload trips/fuses also to checkout The will be a means of regulating speed and voltage. The speed control may be entirely mechanical and similar to what's found on a lawn mower, ie a flap in the cooling air linked to the carburretor/fuel injection. The voltage control is the most likely culprit, these days likely to be some sort of electronic gizmo!
Why would there be an inverter? It generates AC which is what's required.

Looks like you need to reset some circuit breakers.

Yeah try that.
There are a few other things: does the throttle change when you hit the eco throttle button?
Do you get any indicator lights on the front of the generator?
There is a checklist for low AC no AC output in the repair manual. I might scan it for you later on tonight.
If you don't have any lights at all and you've reset the breakers you could try opening it up and simply checking the various connections going to the front panel. The whole front panel might be in a fault condition
The six pin connector might be loose/corroded .. also check the grounds on the chassis and/or any other wires you can find in there.
best of luck
