Warming? Bring It On!

November 27, 2008

"Why then 'tis none to you; for there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." - Hamlet

A little pragmatism rather than apocalyptis would suit us better, too:

Robert Mendelsohn, an economics professor at Yale University, ... says the benefits of global warming for Canada - from a longer growing season to the opening up of shipping through the Northwest Passage - will outweigh the negative effects....

"If you add it all up, it's a good thing for Canada.".

On the whole, moderate climate change of an additional two degrees will likely be beneficial for the world, says Benny Peiser, an anthropologist at John Moores University in Liverpool.

Warmer temperatures will mean more tourists for Canada, reports Richard Tol of the Economic and Social Research Institute in Ireland....

When it's warm out, people tend to be healthier, Moore says, pointing out that diseases like the flu strike hardest in winter, not summer. The effects of increased summer heat can be handled with more air conditioning....

The current agricultural belt will get warmed up and become more productive. Forests will become more productive...

UPDATE

Miranda Devine:

One of Australia's leading enviro-sceptics, the geologist and University of Adelaide professor Ian Plimer, 62, says he has noticed audiences becoming more receptive to his message that climate change has always occurred and there is nothing we can do to stop it.
