POTENT GREENHOUSE GAS RISING

The potent greenhouse gas nitrogen trifluoride - that warms the atmosphere 17,000 times more than carbon dioxide - has been found to be much more prevalent than in all previous estimates by scientists.
Latest research has shown that about 5,400 metric tons of nitrogen trifluoride are in the atmosphere and increasing by about 11 per cent per year due to global warming.
Previous estimates had put levels of the gas at less than 1,200 metric tons in 2006.
Nitrogen trifluoride is colorless and odorless and how much the gas is polluting the atmosphere isn't known.
A research project sponsored by NASA's Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment analyzed air samples gathered over the past 30 years and found that - from a climate perspective - there is a correlation between nitrogen trifluoride and the suite of greenhouse gases produced from human-made emissions that are warming of the planet.
So far science doesn't know how much nitrogen trifluroride is flowing through the atmospheric system and there is little knowledge of its production or disposal.

If you calculate the contribution of nitrogen trifluoride to the greenhouse effect (for instance by multiplying the total amount of this gas present in atmosphere by the factor of 17,000 and comparing this to the total amount of CO2 in the atmosphere) you just get just peanuts. Here are the numbers: The total amount of nitrogen trifluoride in the atmosphere is about 5400 metric tons which corresponds to 9.2 x exp (+7) "CO2 greenhouse units". Compared to the 5.14 x exp (+15) metric tons of CO2 in the atmosphere, the contribution of nitrogen trifluoride is only about 0.00005 % of the CO2 greenhouse effect. Data were taken from Wikipedia.
And both are small compared to the MAJOR greenhouse gas H2O ;)

You're probably right about that! Joe the Farmer has a sprinkler for his 1000 acre farm and vaporizes more H2O in a day than his tractor does in a year!
