HIDDEN ALPS OF ANTARCTICA
Six countries will take part in an expedition that seeks to explain how the Antarctic continental ice cap is melting slower than the Arctic North Pole.
In what has been described as one of the most ambitious explorations of the Antarctic continent researchers will be searching to find out how a hidden mountain range as big as the Alps was formed under ice in the region.
Locked four km below the ice, the mountains are believed to be the birthplace of the huge East Antarctic Ice Sheet and it's here that scientists will use ice-penetrating radar on board two aircraft to compose a detailed picture of the range.
The researchers will also be hunting for ice that is believed to be 1.2 million years old that could unveil information on what triggered climate change over past eons.
The expedition will take samples that will assist climate scientists to make predictions regarding Earth's future climate and the effect global warming will have on the planet.
