NEW FOCUS ON ENERGY ALTERNATIVES

Regardless of who becomes the next president of the US an expected focus on energy alternatives to fossil fuels will take the heat off concerns over a pending world economic recession.
Concerns related to declining stocks of fossil fuels and continuing financial turmoil would drive world leaders to look at new ways of supplying energy needs, according to Cathy Zoi, chief executive officer of Al Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection.
"My very strong belief is that we need to reorient our investments toward this transition to a clean energy economy, and it will be the engine of growth for getting us out of the doldrums that we've gotten in right now," Zoi told the Reuters Global Environment Summit this week.
Reorientation would require that the US capped the limit of greenhouse gas emissions.
Prince Albert of Monaco told the summit that while there are natural cycles to climate change there was a definite correlation between man- made activities and greenhouse gas emissions that were the cause of more recent global warming.
Meanwhile the first draft of a US cap-and-trade bill was released this week with some environmental activists claiming that the wording contained options, which could substantially weaken controls on greenhouse emissions from some sectors.
While the Bush administration accepts that human-made emission are causing climate change it rejects mandatory across-the-board caps on carbon.
Both presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain favour limiting greenhouse emissions.
