Ocean wave energy

I just saw a program on PBS about wave energy pumping sea water onto land at elevation to be returned to generate electricity. It sounded like it might even work.

How does it work if the wind isn't blowing or blowing of the land? How does it work if the tide falls?

It says nothing about wind. They are talking about wave energy and include this info, "Wave action of, National Data Buoy Center, buoy #29 off the coast of Northern California show waves, minimum of 5 feet high average of nine feet high, present 90% of the 24-hour period."
My quesion would be how long to recover the $ invested?

If there has been wind within a thousand miles in the last few days there will be waves. The quote that you snipped provided the info about waves at that location.

Ive sailed on all types of vessals. Without wind there isn't any waves. If were going to waith 100 years for another tidal wave from Indonesia to supply our electricity then point me to the next oil well

Does tide really make waves?

No tide doesnt make waves. But for land based(rite at wave attack shore) wave energy converters dont work when the tide falls.

Then what is a "tidal wave"?

Tidal wave is Slang for tsunamis. dont tell me your that uninformed

That would be "you're". It is a contraction, which means there are letters missing in English.
Tidal wave was never a slang for tsunami. It was a misnomer that was corrected about 30 years ago.
Have a good one.

A contradiction I see. You said it was corrected 30 years ago so it must have been used instead of Tsunami.
Anyways this is a pointless debate. And yes tides do make waves-In the Bay of Fundy the tides are stong enough to make a wave comming into the Bay.
The origional debate was about wind produced waves and their energy capabilities If you use a land based apparatus which depends on waves washing up into the device then as the tide falls, so will the capability of waves to reach the resovoir or to compress air .
If the wind blows of the land(leeward) then the waves will be smoothed out and energy transfer capability will be reduced.
If the wind doesnt blow at all there will not be sufficient waves to proce energy Not to mention designing a device to withstand such large forces

LOL... Nice try
Here is your text that started it. "With out wind there isn't any waves" Now I see a contradiction also.
Anyway. It was fun. You're right about the topic. Back to it.
Back to Maverick.

The system is sized for the average power usage and the flow of water out of the resevior is controlled to meet power demand. The higher elevation of the resevior is used as a battery to store the energy from times of high wind for use during low wind periods.
Perdicted cost would be $1-2per watt if built on a large scale, thats about $0.03 per kwh before transmission. Proably less since the construction in India means lower production costs.
Interesting system
