The carbon dioxide laser (CO2 laser) was one of the earliest gas lasers to be developed (invented by Kumar Patel of Bell Labs in 1964[1]), and is still one of the most useful. Carbon dioxide lasers are the highest-power continuous wave lasers that are currently available. They are also quite efficient: the ratio of output power to pump power can be as large as 20%.
The CO2 laser produces a beam of infrared light with the principal wavelength bands centering around 9.4 and 10.6 micrometers.
Applications
Because of the high power levels available (combined with reasonable cost for the laser), CO2 lasers are frequently used in industrial applications for cutting and welding. They are also very useful in surgical procedures because water (which makes up most biological tissue) absorbs this frequency of light very well. Some examples of medical uses are laser surgery, skin resurfacing ("laser facelifts") (which essentially consist of burning the skin to promote collagen formation), and dermabrasion.
Because the atmosphere is quite transparent to infrared light, CO2 lasers are also used for military rangefinding using LIDAR techniques.

But we Americans as a whole and thereby upon average only produce a mere hundred fold more of what's artificially forced into existence worth of CO2, above and beyond the average of what most all other humans on Earth accomplish. So what's the big deal? (at the very least it proves that we're extremely rich and otherwise extremely powerful, if not a touch dangerous to anyone getting in our polluting way)
The forcing of h2o as raw vapor containing our nifty soot and toxic chemicals into our badly failing environment is clearly much worse, all the way up past 39,000', whereas most CO2 (due to it's specific gravity) is sequestered near the ground, or merging into the ground and into most every form of surface water (much of which used to be ice) that covers most of this wet and salty Earth.
What's wrong with $100/gallon of petrol/diesel and accepting the national average worth of $1/kwhr for your electrical energy cost?
After all, I'm pretty sure those natural gas and a few other energy alternatives derived from the likes of coal, bio-whatever or even yellowcake wouldn't dare jack up their prices. - Brad Guth
