Abu Dhabi: Plans are being made to produce solar energy and use it in lighting, air conditioning and other household and industrial purposes in Abu Dhabi, a senior official has said.
"Masdar, Abu Dhabi's programme in sustainable energy, has looked into solar roof programmes implemented elsewhere, including Japan, Germany, California and Korea and has developed ... a programme suitable for the capital," said Sultan Al Jaber, CEO of the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (ADFEC), the entity executing the Masdar Initiative.
Al Jaber, however, did not set a time frame for introducing solar energy into households.
"At the moment, our team is studying the socio-economic impact of this programme and making its recommendations to the government to pass relevant legislation," he said.
On whether the government will provide incentives to encourage the public to use solar energy, Al Jaber said solar roof programmes generally require strong government intervention and subsidies in order to be widely adopted by consumers.
With regards to primary energy sources, Masdar has already done its own research on renewable technology and has concluded that Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) would be the most affordable and suitable for Abu Dhabi compared to conventional power generation costs.
"We are working diligently on several technologies to meet this target and our team is well under way to meet the technical and commercial challenges ahead," Al Jaber said. Projects already in active development in Abu Dhabi include both photovoltaics (PV) and CSP, providing Masdar with broad coverage of the solar sector.
Iniative
First solar power plant in region Sultan Al Jaber, CEO of Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, the entity executing the Masdar Initiative, said they are in the process of contracting the United Nations Environmental Programme to conduct a comprehensive solar energy resource assessment to evaluate the potential of large-scale Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) projects in Abu Dhabi.
"In tandem, Masdar and with the support of the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority have engaged Fichtner of Germany to provide technical advisory services and the German Aerospace Centre to provide evaluation for the first major solar power plant to be built in the region.
This CSP plant would feed into the national electricity grid and provide opportunities for peak power-saving."
Al Jaber added, "CSP offers considerable potential for Abu Dhabi to become a leader in clean renewable energy, due to the extensive local sunshine conditions as well as the maturity of the technology."

They are also discussing with Russia building a nuclear power plant. I'd say they are trying to cover all their bases.

It makes perfect sense: just like Iran, the less oil they burn at home, the more they have to sell to oil junkies elsewhere.

Exactly. Venezuela, which gets most of it's electricity from hydro, is also looking into nukes, albeit the smaller IV generation kind. The less fossil they burn themselves, the better they will be when it comes to the international NG and Oil markets.

In the cases of venezuela and UAE, that's correct, nuclear bombs however, provide no electricity, so iran is a diferent case.

Have there been any military invasions in the region in the past few years that might spur a country to arm itself against a foe armed with WMDs?

The actual facts may be more elusive than that on Iran. First, most nuclear reactors used to produce plutonium are smaller. Iran is building a full sized Gen III Russian commercial reactor, 1000 MWs. Plus, they have a right to have a close fuel cycle, thus the centrifuges used to produce nuclear fuel. The could use this to build a bomb, by they don't need the reactor to do this.

Oh, it would only be a matter of days before the NeoKKKons and their Propaganda groups like CATO would pump out a stream of lies about how those nations posessed nuclear weapons or had such a program.
It's really been hallarious watching the incompetent Bush Administration deal with North Korea over this issue. After spending years insisting that North Korea had several nuclear weapons and using that lie as a means of renegging on yet another treaty negotiated in good faith, AmeriKKKa - now that North Korea has actually tested a low yield nuclear weapon has changed it's position 180 ' and now claims that North Korea is many years away from constructing a nuclear weapon if ever.
Ahahahahahahaahah..... The sheer incompetence of the AmeriKKKan state is astonishing.
It's time to get the U.N. out of the U.S. and the U.S. out of existance.
