Prices rise as oil plant targeted by al-Qaeda
THE Saudi branch of the al-Qaeda terror network claimed responsibility for a foiled attempt to blow up the world's biggest oil processing plant in Saudi Arabia.
The OPEC kingpin rushed to reassure markets that output was unaffected by the thwarted attack in the oil-rich Eastern Province, which left at least four people dead.
But oil prices jumped $US2 a barrel on news of the attack, which came a year after Saudi-born Osama bin Laden urged his supporters to hit Gulf oil targets.
Claiming responsibility on its website, the Organisation of Al-Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula wrote: "The heroic mujahideen of the squadron of Sheik Osama bin Laden, God protect him, have successfully penetrated the oil and gas refinery in the town of Abqaiq . . . where two car bombs were able to enter."

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- There are varying reports about an attack at the world's largest oil-processing facility in Saudi Arabia.
Officials said suicide bombers, in cars filled with explosives, were prevented from breaking through the gates as gunfire from guards caused the vehicles to explode.
The Saudi oil minister said the blast "did not affect operations" at the facility, refuting an earlier television report that the flow of oil was halted briefly after a pipeline was damaged.
