I take it this is the same excellent Huge as used to hang out in uk.environment ?
Dunno. I've been on Usenet forever and the Internet since before it was called that, so I forget.
I was thinking of

You misunderstand. I meant why not let the Council package up it's services and sell them, in competition to having people shop round for their own.
I would certainly like the option to choose which services I have, and which I choose to provide to others.
A N Wilson was on Any Questions on Friday night, talking sense but getting ignored. I particularly liked his comment on Branson "I wouldn't let him run more services, since I have used his Virgin Trains and the man is incapable of running a whelk stall."

There would be a bureaucracy to arbitrate and there would also be pressure to keep innovative new companies out of the cartel.
Surely not ?!

No. Do they often have EMs ? I do know somebody who got an SEM for 50 which worked after a fairly trivial fix. I'd go for that...
But what would you use it for?
This came up in the shed the other day. There's so many fascination things to ogle under a SEM that what /wouldn't/ you use it for might be a better question.
Quite !

My meningioma section was fascinating. Didn't understand what everything was mind you. The surgeon had the slide prepared specially because he aid I couldn't have the whole thing and I sulked.
Slightly begs the question of whose property it is I guess.
Still - better out than in !

What we write makes no more sense and is of little more consequence than it was when we wrote them on Z80 based systems !
Or with our quill pens.
Yes - though something that makes document reuse easy is good. The 8" floppy was very fine !
Yesterday shredders cost 8 and up. Today they cost 1, and sell, because someone realised customers wanted them and then managed to work out how to do it.
LAs dont even try in this respect. They dont even have the skill set.
Actually I think they do in many cases.
Yes, John, but you don't seem to understand that if one isn't doing it some folk assume that none of them does. It's called journalistic hyperbole or childish tantrums. Take your pick.

As to a wormery in the kitchen.....
What about one? A little one doesn't take up much space http://www.originalorganics.co.uk/wormeries.htm
I like that one - "ideal for children" unfortunately it is far too small to fit a child in it in one piece.
It's also far too small for a families waste - but it is very good for breeding fruit flies in summer. -- Peter Parry. http://www.wpp.ltd.uk/

The big one or the small one?
but it is very good for breeding fruit flies in summer.
Incorrect. Providing it is being operated correctly the worms are the only large scale living thing in it.
You are perhaps getting confused with compost heaps. Flies in such heaps are a sign that they are not being made up correctly.
Next contestant please.

I still have some drives and disks. SA802 drives if I recall.
I only scrapped the Philips 8" WP box about a year ago, though it hadn't been used in anger for about 14 years.

Yes - I have the guts of some old photo type setters which used paper tape. Helps to maintain the mass in the attic !

Out of interest, what needs changing in a fruit-fly ridden compost heap?

"Fruit flies are likely to be present at some point during the summer months where fruit and veg have been added to the compost bins. Whilst these flies are harmless they can easily be prevented by covering the top layer of fruit and vegetable waste with a thin layer of soil."
