Fuel cells introduced to Indian market - 16th January 2006
Fuel cell and hybrid vehicles have had a large presence at this year's Auto Expo in India, as manufacturers target the region's growing car market.
Indian manufacturers Mahindra & Mahindra, and Sonalika Group both used the show to announce plans to produce hydrogen-powered three-wheelers.
Mahindra & Mahindra's HY Alpha fuel cell vehicle will have a range of 109 miles and was displayed alongside the company's diesel-hybrid SUV Scorpio.
Speaking of the Scorpio, Arun Jaura, vice president of research and development for the company told Times of India: "Over the next one year, the vehicle will undergo road tests and we expect it to be commercially available in about two to three years from now."
With Mr Jaura, a former Ford hybrid developer, leading the department, much is expected of the company's fuel cell and hybrid development in the coming years.
It is also expected that foreign manufacturers will be looking to introduce hybrid and fuel cell technologies into the Asian market in the near future, with both Toyota and Ford understood to be looking into making the technology commercially viable in India.
