Finland: Investments in solar energy heating worthwhile R&D news
Helsinki, 1 November, 2005 - According to a study by Senewa, the use of solar energy could save 21% of the heating costs of a one-family house in Finland. The study that was made in the autumn of 2005 compared the heating oil consumption of a house using a combined solar energy and oil system to the consumption of a house with an oil-heating. In a house with combined solar energy and oil heating, the saving was 835 litres a year, corresponding to about EUR 500. The study clearly indicates that investments in a heating system that uses both solar energy and oil for heating are worthwhile.

This study should have been made during the winter when days are much shorter, which you can see if you check the sunshine amounts.You can see that in october the amount of sunny hour in Helsinki (in the very south of Finland) drops to almos one third and to on sixth in november. Also there is a huge difference in the temperature during autum and in winter. To get really valuable data the test should be run for a full year.

Heat exchange pumps are good for Finland. I made a solar grill which works just fine but only 6 months a year in Finland if the cloud cover is less then 30% http://koti.mbnet.fi/xenos/index.htm
