Brighter Compact Fluorescent Lights

Just though I would share this info...
The new spiral CFLs provide much better light output than the old folded tube ones. My wife used to always complain that when I replaced incandescent light bulbs with CFLs that they were too dim. But I bought two 20W spiral CFLs yesterday and they are MUCH brighter than the 60W incandescents they replaced! (They're said to be eqivalent to 100W bulbs)
Apparently the problem with folded tube CFLs is that most of the light comes out the sides and most light fittings mount the bulb vertically which means this light does not do much to light up the room. On the other hand the spiral CFLs shed a good portion of their light downwards where it can do the most good.
The other good thing about the spiral design is that it seems to take up less space which means the CFL will fit inside smaller light fittings than the folded tube design.

You are comparing a 13-15 watt cfl to a 20 watt. Of course the 20 watt is brigher regardless of style. A true comparison of efficiency increase would be a Lumen Per Watt increase, Lpw is on the package for comparisons. If brightness is what you want look for 25 watt cfl with the highest LPW rating

No we weren't. We were discussing tri-lite CF bulbs.

Lumens are the brightness rating whether tri lite or whatever.

Were those Crappy Tire, Walmart or Home Hardware lumens?

I got a three-way fluorescent adapter with a mini-circline bulb at Orchard Supply Hardware in California. Screws into a standard 3 way lamp socket.
Other places you could check for 3way fluorescents: Home Depot (might not be in all stores) Lowes

I can't say that I've noticed any significant difference. But then, the only place in the house that I have CF's smaller than 28W is in the bathroom's 4 bulb fixture. Both styles have been satisfactory in the 45W size for a solitary yard light about 20 feet up.
I use CF's because I can get much more light without more heat.
